THANKING OUR TEACHERS AND SCHOOL STAFF (NOVEMBER 2020) One week after thanksgiving we stumbled across these pictures of thank you rocks we left for teachers and school staff this summer. This picture made us think about how grateful we are for our teachers and school staff. During these crazy times they have stepped up and worked incredibly hard to provide a strong, safe education and a sense of normalcy to the lives of our children. So this seemed like a fitting time to post a thank you for all that they do!
REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS (MAY 2020) On this memorial day we are remembering the sacrifices our fallen soldiers made for us by placing painted American flag rocks on veterans' graves. We are thankful for these heroes.
CHECKING UP ON KINDNESS ROCK GARDENS (APRIL 2019) What's a great thing to do when the weather gets nice? Place kindness rocks of course! After inspecting a few of the kindness rock gardens around town the girls noticed that a few were running low and decided to replenish them!
KINDNESS IN BOSTON (MARCH 2018) After seeing Beauty and the Beast at the Wheelock Family Theater in Boston, members of Troop 62277 found a great nearby spot to place a "Believe in Yourself" kindness rock. Hopefully it will inspire someone to pursue their dreams!
KINDNESS IS EVERYWHERE (FEBRUARY 2018) Girl Scout Brownie Troop 62277 has been working hard to spread their kindness message as far and wide as possible! The troop has been amazed at the kindness shown by others, including so many people in states and countries outside of Massachusetts. Every day photos of new rocks that they have inspired come rolling in! The girls are hoping to have kindness rocks placed as part of their project in as many states and countries as possible and have reached out to friends, family members and fellow girl scouts around the world to try to attain their goal! Click below to read more about some of the submissions we have received. ROCK KITS + GIRL SCOUT INSPIRATION + GREAT LOCAL BUSINESSES = KINDNESS (JANUARY 21, 2018) On January 21, a first batch of kindness rock kits was assembled for distribution. Katherine, fellow Girl Scout Brownie Alexis, and Girl Scout Daisy Charlotte, headed to High Street where they spent two hours going door-to-door to talk to local businesses and public offices about the project and asking them to participate. The girls had a great time and encountered many wonderful people. Favorite moments included:
A visit to Perfect Nails, where the man they spoke with opened up the rock kit then grabbed some nail polish and immediately painted a kindness rock for them. He even gave the girls the bottle of nail polish so they could take it home and use it to paint more!
A wonderful clerk at High Street market was so attentive to the girls, listening to them describe the project, asking them questions and then promising to make one. They were absolutely delighted when a few hours later he had delivered on his promise, by sending a picture of a very cool rock to the [email protected] email address!
The girls can't wait to see which other businesses and public offices will participate! They also had some fun leaving some painted kindness rocks along the way!
THE MISSION GIRL SCOUT TROOP 62277 HAS CHOSEN TO ACCEPT - HOW TO INSPIRE OTHERS TO PAINT KINDNESS ROCKS! Girl Scout Brownie Troop 62277 has officially kicked off phase two of their kindness rock project. The girls spent some time brainstorming which local businesses and public offices to ask to paint kindness rocks in support of the project.
The girls also made a list of states and countries in which they have friends and family who might paint kindness rocks. They discussed how to go about asking people to participate and spent some time creating a template letter to send out.
Finally, the girls had a great time creating a list of places around town to leave kindness rocks! Their goal was to identify places where the rocks would make people happy. That list will continue to grow over the next few weeks!
WESTWOOD GIRL SCOUTS UNITE TO CELEBRATE KINDNESS BY PAINTING KINDNESS ROCKS (JANUARY 6, 2018) On January 6th Girl Scout Troop 62277 hosted a Kindness Rock Painting Event for other Westwood troops, friends and family. The event attracted more than 200 attendees, including over 100 local youth. Girl scout attendees spanned several grade levels including Seniors, Cadettes, Juniors, Brownies and Daisies. In addition to painting kindness rocks, the attendees read from a selection of kindness-focused books, posted thoughts and pictures on a wall of kindness, completed an "eye of kindness craft," and identified other states and countries where they'd like to ask people to paint and distribute kindness rocks.
Several hundred rocks were painted at the event and over 270 were left by attendees for troop 62277 to distribute. The troop will spread them in places where they will make others happy. Some attendees also decided to distribute their painted rocks on their own.
Next up for the girls--they will reach out to local businesses to ask them to paint kindness rocks! They will also kick off the campaign to collect rocks from locations around the world! For those who missed today's event but want to help out, please visit Help us - Paint a Rock Today to learn what you can do to help.
GIRL SCOUT BROWNIE TROOP 62277 THINKS ABOUT KINDNESS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON (DECEMBER 2017) In early December, Girl Scout Brownie Troop 62277 gathered for their annual holiday party. At one of the activity stations the girls learned more about the rock painting project, made lists of friends and family members they want to ask to paint rocks and brainstormed ideas for where to distribute the painted rocks. They also each painted a rock with an inspiration message or picture. Finally they learned more about the big upcoming rock painting event on January 6th when they will come together with Girl scout Troops from across the town to paint hundreds of rocks. Check out some of the rocks they painted in our painted rock gallery!
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU REALIZE YOU FORGOT TO BUDGET FOR AN IMPORTANT ITEM? (NOVEMBER 2017) When reviewing the project budget, Katherine realized that one essential item was missing from the list, ROCKS! While it is easy to find a few rocks outside, it is hard to find enough rocks for several girl scout troops to paint at one time. Katherine decided to ask some local businesses for some help and wow did they come through!
Katherine wrote a letter about her project to Home Depot and hand delivered it to manager Steve. After reading it he donated five bags of River Rocks for the project. At Sam White & Sons in Medfield, Katherine told them about the project and was able to go out to the big River Rock bin and fill a big cardboard box with as many rocks as she could pick up. It was lots of work and took a long time but really fun!
A VERY BIG Thank You to Home Depot in Norwood and Sam White & Sons in Medfield for their support!
THE GREAT NEWS (OCTOBER 2017) In October, Katherine received a letter from Disney/YSA saying that they received an overwhelming number of applications for funding and that her project stood out as being one of the best in the country and was selected for a $500 grant award. She and over 200 other young leaders across the country were awarded grants to organize projects to help make their communities healthier, greener and stronger. Katherine was so excited to get the news!
She set out to engage others in this service adventure starting with her Girl Scout troop leaders and her elementary school principal. Her Girl Scout Troop Leader thought the project would be a perfect fit for the "It's Your World! Change it!" Journey, and invited other local Girl Scout troops to participate in a rock painting event. Her principal was happy to hear the mural on the school playground would be repainted and that the girls would be working on spreading a message of kindness through painting.
And with that Troop 62277 began their adventure to change the world!
INSPIRATION STRIKES (SEPTEMBER 2017) In September of 2017 Katherine, a member of Eastern Massachusetts Girl Scout Brownie Troop 62277, heard about the Disney and Youth Service America Be Inspired Grant Program and decided she wanted to apply. Her proposal detailed how she and her fellow Girl Scout Brownies would improve a physical space in their community by repainting a faded mural at an elementary school in town and would also inspire kindness by encouraging others to create and spread kindness rocks in communities around the world.
